This started as a different article, and as I wrote my list(what I created/consumed/read) for this week, an article bloomed instead. So we’re calling this one:
On my mind this week
Well, I tried and failed to sew a skirt today.
A simple skirt, one I know I’m easily capable of, but I kept making silly mistakes - in cutting the fabric, I accidentally cut the back panel into two pieces. No worries, I managed to make it work, opting to put in a zip instead of my planned elasticated waistband.
Then, the pretty blue thread I’d bought to match the fabric got horrible tangled up as I threaded the sewing machine – and I had to cut metres of it loose.
And still, I couldn’t seem to find the right sewing tension and it kept tangling up and snagging the fabric.
It was like the universe was telling me to go back to basics.
I love diving in to new skills, projects and opportunities. If it feels like it aligns, and I’m even a little bit confident, I’ll dive face first into it with little to no preparation. I mean… I literally moved to South Korea in 2017 without knowing much about the country (this was before the Hallyu wave had fully taken over the Western world).
And last year I left my job with little to no solid business plan in place. And luckily it worked out to keep me afloat, but now, almost a year later I’m learning the basics of business and beginning to think proactively rather than reactively.
I recently joined Mastered, a government-funded bootcamp for creative businesses. And it’s already been incredibly transformative for my mindset, for seeing my work as a true business and setting myself up so I can build on this work for years to come, and have it be a comfortable accompaniment to my writing.
Truly, the workshop found me late last year, once I decided to stop looking for part-time jobs to supplement my editorial work and to commit fully to my business. In true Godly synchronicity, it showed up, I applied and boom, I’m in it. It’s extremely hard work, especially as my work continues around it; but it is rewarding and I now have a business mentor for most of this year!
Overall I’ve had an amazing yet deeply introspective start to the year, thanks partially to The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, which I am ABSOLUTELY going to do a post or two on when I come to the end of. I’ve really been dialled into my spirituality, my purpose and my creativity. I feel God around me every day and I see the opportunities to grow and I’m so very grateful.
If you’re here, reading this, thank you. I love having you along for the ride. Next week, I want to share something more writing or mindset-focused—let me know in the comments if that’s something you’d be interested in!
